POSITION: Database Administrator

Reporting to: Head, Information Technology

Purpose of position:

Design, install, test, administer, support and optimize databases and related database management systems to deliver high performance, high availability, high integrity and reliable business applications that support the banking business. The role is also responsible for implementation of new technology while ensuring security of the information assets of the bank through analysis and giving expert advice on related controls without affecting performance.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Installation, testing and support of new releases/updates of Core Banking application and any supporting systems in line with change management protocols and procedures of the bank.
  • Support the existing systems e.g., CRB, ATMs, SWIFT, etc. to ensure high availability and reliability. This should involve ensuring reliable, timely & verified backups, archiving, replications to the DR site and proper tested recovery procedures are in place.
  • Work closely with the System Administration team to ensure optimal use of hardware resources, deployment of new hardware in support of capacity planning e.g. new ATMs & Core Banking System Hardware and maintaining secure access to the bank’s information assets and ensuring systems are up to date with the current technological trends.
  • Work closely with the Applications developments team during the Application development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, system analysis & design, testing and deployment into live environment of newly developed applications as well as maintenance of existing in-house applications.
  • Partake in the End of Day/Month/Year Procedures with the related reporting.
  • Provide first & second level end-user support and training in use of the application software and related systems
  • Participate in the preparation and distribution of accurate daily/monthly/annual reports to the stakeholders as and when required to support management decision making through data mining, scripting and reporting.
  • Participate in establishment of policies and procedures with a view of enhancing the security, reliability, availability and integrity of databases.
  • Ensure strict adherence to the industry best practices in maintaining data standards including adherence to legal standards such as the Data Protection Act
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation of all corporate databases, operations manuals and procedures.
  • Any other duties assigned by the line manager


Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • An undergraduate degree in Software Engineering, Information Systems & Technology, Computer Science or any related field from a reputable institution is required
  • Professional certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional, Microsoft SQL Server Professional, Linux+, etc. are an added advantage
  • Minimum of 2 years working experience preferably in a busy financial institution using SQL in administering Database Management Systems
  • Experience in working with multiple storage and backup systems
  • Knowledge of Oracle, SQL and PL/SQL.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server Operating System and Linux Operating System.
  • Self-motivated team player with ability to work independently and/or as part of a team and adapting to an ever-demanding environment.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and writing.
  • Good listening, presentation and organisational skills.
  • Good working knowledge of banking systems, operations and processes.
  • Good working knowledge of Data Analysis, design, modelling, integration warehousing and migration Tools
  • A strong desire to establish Standards of Best Practice.
